Translation

In many countries, March 8th is International Women’s Day, and it is often traditional to give women flowers as a gift. But only in Italy is this tradition linked to a very particular flower: the mimosa.

The tradition of the mimosa, a yellow flower with a strong color and scent, was born after World War II when Italy began celebrating Women’s Day.

Initially, the violet was chosen as the symbol of this new holiday, an important flower for left-wing political parties. However, some women in the Communist Party were against this choice: the violet was too expensive and rare, especially considering Italy’s disastrous economic conditions at the time, just after the war.

For this reason, Teresa Mattei, a former partisan, proposed using a much more common and easy-to-find flower: the beautiful mimosa, which blooms everywhere in Italy in February.

The choice of the mimosa was immediately successful and is still the symbol of Women’s Day in Italy today.
