Why International Women's Day is celebrated on March 8?

Translation

In many parts of the world, International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8th, often mistakenly referred to as the “Women’s Day holiday”.

However, this celebration was not originally linked to March 8th: the first Women’s Day was celebrated in the United States in 1909, but in February, on the occasion of a demonstration in favor of women’s voting rights.

The “Woman’s Day” initiative was repeated the following year, always linked to the demands for women’s suffrage, but the first real Women’s Day celebrated on March 8th only came in 1914, perhaps because it fell on a Sunday.

Over the years, several urban legends have arisen about the origins of Women’s Day, all of which are quite unfounded. One of the most widespread, at least in Italy, claims that the holiday was established to commemorate the death of hundreds of female workers in the 1908 New York textile factory fire that occurred on March 8th.
