questa insolita notte è stata causata da una forte tempesta elettromagnetica, dovuta all’intensa attività del Sole. secondo gli scienziati, è stata la più forte dal 2003.

Lo spettacolo dell’aurora è stato visto sia in Nord America che in Nord Europa. molte aurore boreali sono state ammirate anche nei cieli italiani, per esempio in Sardegna, Abruzzo, Basilicata, Emilia-Romagna e in molte zone della Pianura Padana.

The passive form

“è stata causata”
(has been caused)

The passive is a verb form used when the subject of the verb is not the one doing the action, but the person or thing affected BY the action.
The element responsible for the action, when present, is introduced by the preposition “DA” (= “by”). In Italian, passive verbs are always formed with:

– ESSERE (same tense as active form) + PAST. PARTICLE of the verb

Let’s see some examples:

– Un uomo È STATO DERUBATO da un ladro (A man WAS ROBBED by a thief)
(→ active: Un ladro HA DERUBATO un uomo)

– La mia bici È STATA RUBATA ieri (My bike WAS STOLEN yesterday)
(→ active: Qualcuno HA RUBATO la mia bici)

The night between Friday, May 11, and Saturday, May 12, will be remembered for many years as the night of the Northern Lights. In much of the world, it was possible to observe magnificent auroras.

This unusual night was caused by a strong electromagnetic storm, due to intense solar activity. According to scientists, it was the strongest since 2003.

The spectacle of the aurora was seen both in North America and in Northern Europe. Many auroras were also admired in the Italian skies, for example in Sardinia, Abruzzo, Basilicata, Emilia-Romagna, and in many areas of the Po Valley.
