La fioritura dei ciliegi in Giappone è arrivata in ritardo

Cherry blossoms in Japan arrived later

Grammar

Stare + gerundio = present continuous

“stanno andando nei parchi”
(they are going to the parks)

In Italian, the present continuous is expressed using the combination of the verb “stare” (to stay) and the gerund form of the main verb.
This construction is commonly used to indicate an ongoing action or a temporary situation in the present:

– Sto mangiando la cena (I am eating dinner)
– Che stai leggendo? (What are you reading?)
– Stanno ballando (They are dancing)

Translation

These days, many Japanese people are going to the city parks to admire the cherry blossom (sakura in Japanese).

This year, the blossom has arrived later than usual: five days later than the average, and 15 days later than last year.

The reason for the delay in the blossom, which usually occurs between late March and early April, was the bad weather.

The Japanese celebrate the blossom with the ancient tradition of hanami: they gather to admire the flowers together and organize picnics under the cherry trees.
