La fioritura dei ciliegi in Giappone è arrivata in ritardo

Cherry blossoms in Japan arrived later

Grammar

Stare + gerundio = present continuous

“stanno affollando i parchi”
(they are crowding the parks)

In Italian, the present continuous is expressed using the combination of the verb “stare” (to stay) and the gerund form of the main verb.
This construction is commonly used to indicate an ongoing action or a temporary situation in the present:

– Sto mangiando la cena (I am eating dinner)
– Che stai leggendo? (What are you reading?)
– Stanno ballando (They are dancing)

Translation

In these days, many Japanese people are crowding parks and streets in cities to admire and photograph the annual cherry blossom (sakura in Japanese) blooming.

This year, the blooming has been the latest since 2012, arriving 15 days later compared to last year and five days later than the average. Usually, the blooming reaches its peak between March and April, but this year it has been delayed due to bad weather.

In Japan, the cherry blossom marks the arrival of spring and is celebrated with the ancient tradition called hanami, which means enjoying the blossom together, perhaps by organizing a picnic under the cherry trees.
