Perché il 26 dicembre in Italia è “Santo Stefano”?

Why is December 26th called 'Santo Stefano' in Italy?

Grammar

Gerundio causale
Gerund with caual meaning

“… essendo addirittura il santo patrono”
(…being even the patron saint)

In this sentence, the gerund essendo is used to express a cause-effect relationship.
If we were to remove the gerund and rephrase the sentence, it would read: “poiché è il santo patrono del paese” (because he is patron saint of the country).
Here are some more examples:

– Essendo stanca, ho preferito non uscire (I preferred not to go out because I was tired)
– Essendosi allenata duramente, ha vinto la gara di corsa (She won the running race because she trained hard)
(Having saved money, I was able to afford to take a trip because I saved money)

Translation

So, let’s recap: on December 24th, for Italians, it’s “la Vigilia” (Christmas Eve); the 25th is “Natale” (Christmas), and the 26th is “Santo Stefano” (St. Stephen’s Day).

But who is this Santo Stefano, so important to come right after Christmas?

Well, St. Stephen was the first martyr in the history of Christianity, the first Christian to be killed precisely because of his religious faith.

For this reason, he is remembered on December 26th, symbolizing the proximity between Jesus Christ, born on the 25th, and the martyrs, the first witnesses of the new religion around the world.

St. Stephen is celebrated in almost all of Europe, particularly in Serbia, being even the patron saint of the country. However, the Serbs celebrate him on January 9th, not on December 26th like the Italians.
