Perché si festeggia il Natale?

Why do we celebrate Christmas?

Grammar

Da… a = from… to

“La festa… dal 17 al 23 dicembre”
(The celebration… from the 17th to the 23rd of December)

In Italian, to express “from… to…” when indicating a range or span of time, you can use the prepositions “da” (from) and “a” (to).
Here are some examples:

– Il negozio è aperto dal lunedì al venerdì (The store is open from Monday to Friday)
– Sarò in vacanza dal 1° al 15 agosto (I will be on vacation from August 1st to August 15th)
– L’evento durerà dalle 10:00 alle 18:00 (The event will last from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm)

In these examples, “da” is followed by the starting point of the range, and “a” is followed by the endpoint.
Note that  “dalle / alle” are used when referring to a specific time of day.

Translation

Christmas is the most important holiday for many Italians. But why is it called that?
It is called this way because, for Christians, Jesus Christ is born on December 25th: “natale”, in fact, means “birth”.

However, it is not a real anniversary: the Gospels, in fact, do not mention the exact day of Jesus’ birth. So why December 25th and not another day?
The reason is historical. Christian Christmas, in fact, replaced other traditional Roman festivals, such as the Saturnalia, the festival for the god Saturn, from December 17th to 23rd. December 20th, in particular, was the “Sigillaria” festival, that is, the exchange of gifts, just like at Christmas.

According to the Roman calendar, furthermore, December 25th is the winter solstice. In many cultures, this festival is linked to the sun, because after the winter solstice, the days become longer. On December 25th, the Romans celebrated the god of the “Unconquered Sun”. Christians, therefore, chose December 25th as the day of Jesus’ birth to replace the Roman festival of the Sun.

Even the Christmas tree comes from a festival linked to the winter solstice, the traditional Germanic festival “Yule”. Even today, in some languages of Scandinavia, Christmas is called “jul”.

And did you celebrate Christmas? What are the Christmas traditions in your country?
