Le nuove parole del vocabolario italiano

Grammar

CI + NE = CE NE

“…ce ne sono alcuni provenienti dallo slang”
(…there are some of them from youth slang)

When used together with the pronoun NE, the pronoun CI changes form to CE:
– CI NE > CE NE

When used together with ESSERCI, NE precedes the verb:
– CI SONO + NE > CE NE SONO
– CI È + NE > CE N’È

Let’s see some examples:

– Quante persone ci sono? – Ce ne sono cinque (-How many people are there? -There are five of those)
– Quanti libri ci sono? – Ce n’è uno solo (-How many books are there? -There is only one)

Translation

Every year, the most authoritative Italian language dictionary, the Zingarelli, is updated with new words and expressions that have become common usage.

In the 2024 edition, there are a thousand more words compared to the previous one.

Among the newly added terms, there are some from youth slang, often of English origin, for example, bro (meaning “friend”) and crush (meaning a person you’re in love with).

Other neologisms are closely related to current events, for example, eco-ansia (meaning anxiety caused by climate change) and woke (a derogatory term for someone engaged in social battles).

However, our favorite is petricore, which means the typical smell of the earth after the rain.
