All’Università IULM di Milano arriva il corso sulle parolacce

The first course on swear words at the IULM university of Milan

Keywords

prendere il via: to start, to begin

la parolaccia: swear word, curse word

il turpiloquio: foul language

basti pensare: just think of, consider

la competenza linguistica: linguistic competence

Grammar

Stare per + inf. = “about to”

“sta per prendere il via”
(is about to begin)

The form “stare per + verb infinitive” is used to express IMMINENT actions that are about to happen:

→ STARE PER + INF. = about to…

– STIAMO PER per partire (We are ABOUT TO leave)
– La partita STA PER iniziare (The match WILL BEGIN soon)

Translation

At the IULM University in Milan, the first course in Italy dedicated to swear words is about to begin.

The course, titled Communication and Swear Words, has seen a surge in registrations, with only 30 spots available.

“I won’t be teaching swear words to the students,” jokes the instructor Vito Tartamella, who clarifies: “profanity is the language of emotions and is an integral part of linguistic competence.”

And it’s true: one of the first things people learn when studying a new language are swear words.
