Superlativo relativo
Relative superlative

“il 2022 è stato l’anno più caldo di sempre”
(2022 was the hottest year ever)

The superlative is used to show the highest degree of a certain quality within a specific group or context (in this case, years).

The structure of the superlative in Italian is as follows:

  • Definite article (il, la, i, le, etc.) + noun + più/meno (more/less) + adjective + “di” or “tra/fra” (referring to the group or context)

Here are a few more examples:

  1. La pizza più buona di Roma. (The best pizza in Rome)
In this example, the superlative is formed with “più” (more) and the adjective “buona” (good) to indicate the highest degree of goodness.
  2. La casa meno costosa del quartiere. (The least expensive house in the neighborhood)
In this case, the superlative is formed using “meno” (less) and the adjective “costosa” (expensive) to indicate the lowest degree of expensiveness.
