Qual è la storia della Giornata Mondiale del Libro?

What’s the story behind the World Book Day?

Grammar

Pronome relativo CUI
Relative pronoun CUI

“…è il giorno in cui sono deceduti…”
(it is the day in which died…)

“Cui” is a relative pronoun in Italian that is used to introduce a subordinate clause and to refer to a noun or a pronoun that comes before it.
It is used instead of “che” (that, which) when following a preposition.

For example, in the sentence above, ”in cui” means “in which” or “on which” in English. It introduces a relative clause and links it to the noun “giorno” (day) that was previously mentioned.
Here are more examples:

– “Nella città IN CUI abito ci sono molti cinema”
= There are a lot of cinemas in the town IN WHICH I live

– “L’amico A CUI scrivo si chiama Luca”
= The friend TO WHOM I’m writing is called Luca

– “La casa IN CUI abito è carina”
= The house IN WHICH I live is cozy

In the sentence above, ”in cui” means “in which” or “on which” in English. It introduces a relative clause and links it to the noun “giorno” (day) that was previously mentioned.

Translation

Well, the day after Earth Day, today is the turn of World Book Day. Officially established by UNESCO in 1995, “World Book and Copyright Day” is celebrated worldwide every April 23rd.

The aim of this day is to encourage people to discover the pleasure of reading, and at the same time, to value the contribution that authors make to the humanity.

April 23rd was chosen because it is the day when three fundamental figures of world literature died in 1616: the Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes, the British writer William Shakespeare, and the Peruvian Inca Garcilaso de la Vega.

On this occasion, starting from 2001, UNESCO appoints a World Book Capital every year. The first was Madrid, and this year it is Accra, in Ghana.
