“Il sogno di tutti gli appassionati di ciclismo è che questa rivalità possa continuare negli anni a venire”
(The dream of all cycling enthusiasts is that this rivalry can continue in the years to come)

In Italian, the subjunctive form is often used to convey wishes, hopes, desires, or uncertainties about future events.

Hence, in the above sentence, the verb “possa continuare” is in the subjunctive form because it expresses a desire, wish, or possibility rather than stating a definite fact.
In this context, it reflects the dream or hope of all cycling enthusiasts for the rivalry to continue in the future, even though its realization is uncertain.
