Grammar

Pur + di = preposizione finale
“Pur + di” introducing a final clause

“…pur di riuscire ad accaparrarsi almeno uno dei pezzi”
(…just to be able to grab at least one of the items)

The conjunction “pur di” is used to introduce a subordinate clause expressing a final goal or result, indicating the extreme measures someone is willing to take in order to achieve it. It can be translated as “in order to” or “just to” in English.
In the sentence above, the use of “pur di” emphasizes the extreme measures that people are willing to take (i.e. waiting in line since dawn) just to get at least one of the pieces for sale.

Here are some examples:

  • Vado in palestra tutti i giorni pur di rimanere in forma (I go to the gym every day in order to stay in shape)
  • Sono stato in piedi per ore pur di vedere il concerto (I stood up for hours in order to see the concert)
  • Studierò anche di notte pur di riuscire a superare l’esame di italiano! (I will study even at night just to be able to pass the Italian exam!)

Translation

Everyone is crazy about Lidl! Some time ago, the German discount chain Lidl launched its own limited edition clothing collection “Lidl Fan Collection” for sale in Italy, as it has already done in some Northern European countries.

As expected, the collection was a huge hit in Italy as well, with people queuing up in front of stores since dawn just to get their hands on at least one of the items. The collection, particularly the sneakers, sold out almost everywhere within a few hours.

And as predicted, many of these pieces are already being resold on eBay or other online stores at prices even ten times higher: the sneakers, whose original price is €12.99, are now being sold for as much as €1,500. A real bargain for the seller…
