Grammar

Periodo ipotetico
Hypothetical period

“Tutto normale, se non fosse che Giuseppina ha 86 anni!”
(Everything is normal, if it were not for the fact that Giuseppina is 86 years old!)

Let’s break down the grammar:

  • “se non fosse che” translates to “if it were not for the fact that”. The congiuntivo imperfetto (“fosse”) is used here to express a hypothetical situation that is contrary to fact, i.e., the fact that Giuseppina is 86 years old is not considered “normal”.

To rephrase this sentence using the hypothetical period of the second type, with condizionale and congiuntivo imperfetto, we could say:

“Se Giuseppina non avesse 86 anni, sarebbe tutto normale.”

This translates to “If Giuseppina were not 86 years old, everything would be normal.”

Here, “Se Giuseppina non avesse 86 anni” is the “if” clause (protasis) and uses the congiuntivo imperfetto (avesse) for the verb “to have” (avere), while “sarebbe tutto normale” is the main clause (apodosis) and uses the condizionale presente (sarebbe) for the verb “to be” (essere).

The hypothetical period of the second type is used to express a hypothetical situation that is currently not true.

Translation

At the end of the match against Lazio, won by Inter 3-1 at San Siro stadium in Milan, the cameras captured Giuseppina, an Inter fan, celebrating by blowing kisses to the players and jumping with joy.

Everything seemed normal, except for the fact that Giuseppina is 86 years old!

“I’m 86 years old,” says Giuseppina, “but I have been cheering for Inter for 87 years, since I was in my mother’s womb, and she was an Inter fan too.”

She was at the stadium with her 26-year-old nephew Dennis, who is also a huge Inter fan. He takes her to every game, saying, “Otherwise, she won’t talk to me for days,” Dennis confesses.

Born in San Severo, in the province of Foggia (Puglia), Giuseppina Tricarico has been living in Turin for 70 years and has always been an Inter supporter. She has passed down her passion for Inter to her family, including her children and grandchildren.

The images of the granny fan, posted by Inter’s social media accounts, have gone viral and have been appreciated by all those who genuinely love and support their team.
