Grammar

Participio passato come aggettivo
Past particles as adjective

“…l’ultima tappa corsa nello scenografico centro di Roma”
(…the final stage held in the scenic center of Rome)

In Italian, the past participle can be used as an adjective to describe the state, condition, or quality of a noun. When used as an adjective, the past participle agrees in gender (masculine or feminine) and number (singular or plural) with the noun it modifies.

In the sentence above, the past participle “corsa” is used as an adjective tois used as an adjective to describe the noun “tappa” (stage).

The past participle agrees in gender and number with the noun it modifies. In this case, “corsa” agrees with “tappa” because they both refer to a singular feminine noun. If the noun were masculine or plural, the past participle would change accordingly.

Here are some examples:

  1. Una casa abbandonata (an abandoned house) – “abbandonata” agrees with the feminine noun “casa”
  2. Una strada bloccata (a blocked road) – “bloccata” agrees with the feminine noun “strada”
  3. Gli edifici danneggiati (damaged buildings) – “danneggiati” agrees with the plural masculine noun “edifici”

In these examples, the past participles “abbandonata,” “stanchi,” “bloccata,” and “danneggiati” are used as adjectives to describe the state or condition of the nouns they modify.
