Percentages

“…è aumentato dell’11,5%”
(…has increased by 11.5%)

In Italian, percentages are expressed using the word “percento” or the symbol “%”, similar to English. To talk about percentages, you can use the following structure:

[number] + “percento” or “%” + DI + group

  • Il 10 percento delle persone vive in città (10 percent of people live in cities)
  • Abbiamo completato il 50% del progetto (We have completed 50% of the project)

When expressing an increase or decrease of a quantity, you need to use the preposition “di” before the article and the percentage number:

aumentare/diminuire + DI + art. + %

  • La compagnia ha aumentato i prezzi del 5% (The company increased its prices by 5%)
  • Gli affitti sono diminuiti del 10% (Rentals decreased by 10%)
