Grammar

Pronome indiretto GLI
Indirect object pronoun GLI

“Il premio gli è stato conferito”
(The prize was awarded to him)

Indirect object pronoun replace nouns and answer the question “to whom/for whom?”.
They’re used when the verb requires the preposition “a”.
For the 3rd person masculine singular we use the pronoun “GLI”:

  • Gli ho dato il libro. (I gave the book to him)
  • Gli hai telefonato? (Did you call him?)
  • Digli che non posso rispondere (Tell him that I cannot answer)

Note that “gli” can also be used as a plural indirect object pronoun meaning “to them/for them“, instead of the more formal “loro”:

  • Gli ho dato il libro (I gave the book to them)

Normally comes before the verb. However, if there are two verbs, or the verb is in the gerund, imperative or infinitive form, the pronoun follows the verb:

  • Mi piace parlargli (I like talking to him)

Fosse is 64 years old and is a versatile intellectual: he is the author of novels, theatrical dramas, essays, poetry, and books for children, but he is also an important translator.

He is a well-known figure in his country, and his books have been translated into more than 50 languages.
One of his most acclaimed works is the series of novels called Settology, published in three volumes in 2022, which traces the life of an elderly painter.
