Superlativo relativo
Relative superlative
“Il “tormentone” è la canzone più famosa dell’estate”
(The “tormentone” is the most famous song of the summer)
In Italian, the superlative form is used to express the highest degree of a quality among a group.
The “superlativo relativo” is similar to the English “the most/the least…”.
It is formed by using the definite article “il, la, lo, i, le, gli” + “più/meno” + adjective + preposition “di/tra/in” + the group you’re comparing:
> art. (il/la…) + più/meno + adj. + prep. (di/tra…) + group
For example, in the sentence above, “la canzone più famosa dell’estate” is the superlativo relativo. Here, “la più famosa” means “the most famous” and “dell’estate” specifies the group being compared (in this case, “of the summer”).
Here are a few more examples:
- “Luca è il ragazzo più alto della classe.” (Luca is the tallest boy in the class)
(This is the least interesting book I’ve read)
(Maria is the most diligent student at the university)
(Chocolate cake is the most loved dessert by children)
