Il cantautore italiano Toto Cutugno è morto a 80 anni

Grammar

Infinito con pronomi
Infinitive with pronouns

“È riuscito a vincerlo sono una volta”
(He managed to win it only once)

In Italian, pronouns follow the infinitive form of the verb, and must be attached to the end of the verb to create a single word.

Note that the final “e” of the infinitive is dropped before attaching the pronoun.

  • mangiare + lo > mangiarlo (to eat it / eating it)
  • parlare + gli > parlargli (to talk to him / talking to him)
  • vedere + la > vederla (to see her / seeing her)

Let’s see some more examples:

  • Voglio mangiarlo subito. (I want to eat it right away.)
  • Devo parlargli domani mattina. (I need to talk to him tomorrow morning.)
  • Non vedo l’ora di vederla di nuovo. (I can’t wait to see her again.)
  • Puoi farla da solo o hai bisogno di aiuto? (Can you do it by yourself, or do you need help?)
