Grammar

“Pensare A” VS “pensare DI”

“Quanto spesso pensi all’Impero romano?”
(How often do you think about the Roman Empire?)

1 – PENSARE + A + NOUN = to think about STH/SB

When the verb “pensare” (to think) is followed by the preposition A,  it conveys the idea of  thinking about something/someone:

  • Quando penso alla pasta mi viene l’acquolina in bocca (When I think about pasta, my mouth waters)
  • Penso sempre a lei (I always think about her)

2 – PENSARE + DI + VERB = to think about DOING STH

When it’s followed by the preposition A, it conveys the idea of  thinking about doing something in the future:

  • Che pensate di fare domani? (What do you plan to do tomorrow?)
  • Penso di riuscire a finire il progetto stasera (I think I’ll be able to finish the project tonight)
