Firenze: la “ferita” su Palazzo Strozzi

Florence: the "wound" on Palazzo Strozzi

Translation

On Friday, March 19th, a new art installation was inaugurated on the façade of Palazzo Strozzi in Florence, a symbol of the Renaissance in Florence.

The work, titled “The Wound”, was created by French artist JR, and is a monumental black-and-white collage that partially covers the façade of the building: an enormous tear 28 meters high and 33 meters wide.

An optical illusion through which it is possible to peek inside the magnificent palace, combining realistic elements with imaginary elements, such as Botticelli’s masterpieces kept in the Uffizi Gallery.

“The Wound”, according to its author, “makes visible the profound impact of Covid-19 on culture”. It represents the deep wound that the pandemic has caused to the world of culture, brought to its knees by the prolonged closure of museums, galleries, cinemas, and theaters.

The installation will be on display until August 22nd, 2021.
