Grammar

Superlativo relativo
Relative superlative

“Adhara è la bambina più intelligente del mondo”
(Adhara is the smartest child in the world)

In Italian, the superlative form is used to express the highest degree of a quality among a group. There are two forms of the superlative: the relative superlative (superlativo relativo) and the absolute superlative (superlativo assoluto).

The “superlativo relativo” is similar to the English “the most/the least…”. It is formed by using the definite article “il, la, lo, i, le, gli” + “più/meno” + adjective + preposition “di/tra/in” + the group you’re comparing.

For example, in the sentence above, ”la più intelligente del mondo” is the superlativo relativo. Here, “la più intelligente” means “the most intelligent” and “del mondo” specifies the group being compared (in this case, “the world”).

Here are a few more examples:

  1. “Luca è il ragazzo più alto della classe.” (Luca is the tallest boy in the class)
  2. “Questo è il libro meno interessante che ho letto.” (This is the least interesting book I’ve read)
  3. “Maria è la studentessa più diligente dell’università.” (Maria is the most diligent student at the university)
  4. “La torta al cioccolato è il dolce più amato dai bambini.” (Chocolate cake is the most loved dessert by children)
