In Brasile c’è un’altra Fontana di Trevi

In Brazil there is another Trevi Fountain

Grammar

Participio passato come aggettivo
Past particles as adjective

“La replica, realizzata in poco più di un anno”
(The replica, made in just over a year)

In Italian, past participles can often be used as adjectives. In the sentence above, “realizzata” is the past participle of the verb “realizzare” (to realize or create), and it is used as an adjective to describe “la replica” (the replica).

The past participle used as an adjective agrees in gender and number with the noun it is modifying. In this case, “replica” is feminine singular, so “realizzata” is also feminine singular.

Here are more examples:

  1. “Ho comprato una torta fatta in casa.” (I bought a homemade cake – Here “fatta” is the past participle of “fare” used as an adjective to describe the cake.)
  2. “La lettera scritta a mano era molto personale.” (The handwritten letter was very personal –  Here “scritta” is the past participle of “scrivere” used as an adjective to describe the letter.)

Translation

As everyone knows, to throw a coin into the iconic Trevi Fountain, you have to go to… Serra Negra, a thermal resort located 150km from Sao Paulo, Brazil.

No mistake. That’s right: to promote local tourism, the Municipality of Serra Negra has decided to create a replica of the Trevi Fountain in Rome, which is 11 meters high and 21 meters wide.

The replica, built in just over a year at a cost of around 300,000 euros, was inaugurated in the past few days.

The project has received many criticisms, but the project’s officials defend it, clarifying that in addition to boosting tourism, it pays homage to Italy, with which the locals have strong ties due to the massive immigration of Italians that took place in the early 20th century.
