Grammar

Gerundio causale
Gerund with causal meaning

“aveva fame, avendo saltato la colazione”
(he was hungry, having skipped breakfast)

In this sentence, the past gerund “avendo saltato la colazione” is used to express a cause-effect relationship. It indicates that the reason for the student’s action of eating the banana was that he was hungry, as he had skipped breakfast.

If we were to remove the past gerund and rephrase the sentence, it would read: “Ha risposto che aveva fame perché aveva saltato la colazione” (He replied that he was hungry because he had skipped breakfast).

Here are some more examples of the past gerund with causal meaning:

  • Essendosi svegliato tardi, è arrivato in ritardo a lavoro. (Having woken up late, he arrived late to work)
  • Avendo dimenticato le chiavi di casa, sono rimasto fuori per due ore. (Having forgotten my house keys, I was locked out for two hours)
  • Non avendo studiato abbastanza, ha preso un brutto voto all’esame. (Not having studied enough, he got a bad grade on the exam)
