Grammar

Le date
Dates

To write dates in Italian, the format is typically “il [day] [month] [year]”.
For example:

  • il 23 aprile 1616 = April 23rd, 1616
  • l’ 8 ottobre 2022 = October 8th, 2022
  • il 25 dicembre 2023 = December 25th, 2023

Note that in Italian, the day comes before the month.

Additionally, months are not capitalized in Italian, while days and years are.

When referring to the first day of the month, “il primo” is more commonly used than “l’uno.”
While “l’uno” is technically correct, using “il primo” is considered more idiomatic and natural in spoken and written Italian:

  • il primo marzo = March 1st
  • il primo luglio = July 1st
  • il primo dicembre = December 1st

Translation

Today is the 28th “World Book Day”.

This celebration was established in 1995 to honor books, reading, and great writers.

The date of the celebration, April 23rd, was chosen because on this day in 1616, three very important writers died: the Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes, the English writer William Shakespeare, and the Peruvian Inca Garcilaso de la Vega.

Every year, UNESCO also chooses a World Book Capital. This year, it is Accra, Ghana.
