Grammar

“Anche se – Nonostante…”: Frase concessiva
Concessive Clause: “Anche se – Nonostante… “

“Nonostante l’anno di pandemia abbia aggravato la precarietà economica”
(Despite the pandemic year exacerbating economic insecurity)

All these conjunctions (anche se – nonostante – malgrado – sebbene – benché) introduce a CONCESSIVE clause, with the meaning of “despite – even though – although”.
There are some differences in their use:

  1. Anche se + INDICATIVE:

“ANCHE SE piove, esco”
= EVEN THOUGH it’s raining, I go out

2. Nonostante-Malgrado-Sebbene-Benché + SUBJUNCTIVE

– “Esco NONOSTANTE sia stanco
= I go out EVEN THOUGH I’m tired

– “Vorrei mangiare MALGRADO non abbia fame
= I’d like to eat EVEN THOUGH I’m not hungry

3. with NOUN: all these conjunctions can introduce a verb, but only “nonostate-malgrado” can be used with nouns:

→ NONOSTANTE – MALGRADO + NOUN

– “Nonostante-Malgrado LA PIOGGIA (n.), sono uscito”
= Despite THE RAIN, I went out

But:

– “Sebbene-Benché PIOVESSE (v.), sono uscito”
= Despite it WAS RAINING, I went out

As every year, the US magazine Forbes has compiled its 35th annual list of the richest people in the world.

Despite the pandemic year exacerbating economic insecurity for many people worldwide, the number of billionaires has increased significantly, with 660 more “big shots” than last year.

For the fourth consecutive year, Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of the e-commerce giant Amazon, takes first place with an estimated net worth of $177 billion, $64 billion more than last year, thanks to the growth of Amazon’s stock particularly due to the pandemic.
