Tutti pazzi per le scarpe di Lidl!

All crazy for Lidl sneakers!

qualche giorno fa, molte persone in Italia sono state in fila davanti ai supermercati Lidl per comprare i vestiti della collezione “Lidl Fan Collection”.

I vestiti sono finiti in poco tempo e molte persone non sono riuscite a comprare niente. Poco dopo, però, su eBay e altri negozi online molte persone hanno iniziato a rivendere quei vestiti a prezzi molto più alti: le scarpe da 12,99 euro costano fino a 1.500 euro. Un vero affare…

E voi, che ne pensate?

Grammar

Prefisso “-ri”
The prefix “-ri”

“…molte persone hanno iniziato a rivendere quei vestiti”
(…many people have started reselling those clothes)

The prefix “ri-” in Italian can be used to indicate repetition or the idea of doing something again. In this sentence, the verb “rivendere” (to resell) is preceded by the prefix “ri-” to indicate the action of reselling the clothes.

Here are some other examples of verbs with the prefix “ri-“:

  • rifare (to redo) → Ho dovuto rifare l’esercizio più volte (I had to redo the exercise multiple times)
  • riportare (to bring back) → Hai riportato il libro alla biblioteca? (Did you bring back the book to the library?).
  • riscrivere (to rewrite) → Ho riscritto il testo tre volte prima di esserne soddisfatto (I rewrote the text three times before being satisfied with it).
  • risentire (to hear again, to get in touch again) → Dovrei risentire il mio vecchio amico per organizzare una cena insieme (I should get in touch with my old friend to arrange a dinner together).
  • rimangiarsi (to take back, to withdraw a statement) → Non puoi rimangiarti quello che hai detto! (You can’t take back what you said!)

Note that the use of the prefix “ri-” is not always necessary to express repetition in Italian. Sometimes, the context of the sentence alone is enough to convey the idea of repeating an action.

Translation

A few days ago, many people in Italy queued up in front of Lidl supermarkets to buy clothes from the “Lidl Fan Collection”.

The clothes sold out quickly, and many people were unable to buy anything. However, soon after, many people began reselling those clothes at much higher prices on eBay and other online stores: shoes that cost €12.99 are being sold for as much as €1,500. A real bargain…
