How to use the verb “piacere”
“A molti altri il Vision Pro non piace”
(Many others don’t like the Vision Pro)
The verb piacere (to like) has an unusual construction: the subject of the verb is the thing one likes, the person who likes something is denoted by an indirect object pronoun.
Hence, the meaning of piacere corresponds to to please, to be pleasing to, rather than to like: in English you “like” something, in Italian it’s the object that “pleases” you.
For this reason, piacere is mostly used in the THIRD PERSON singular (piace) and plural (piacciono)
– MI PIACE lo sport = Lo sport PIACE A ME
> I LIKE sport (→ sport is pleasing to me)
– Non MI PIACCIONO i gatti = I gatti non PIACCIONO A ME
> I don’t LIKE cats (→ cats are not pleasing to me)
– TI PIACE la pizza = La pizza PIACE A TE
> You LIKE pizza (→ pizza pleases you)
