Translation

60 years ago, on April 12th, Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin became the first human being to travel into space aboard the Vostok 1 spacecraft (“east” in Russian).

The mission was a huge success for the Soviet Union’s space program, which at the time was more advanced than the American program.

Space was, in fact, one of the many competitions between the Soviet Union and the United States during the Cold War.

Gagarin’s mission began precisely at 9:07 am on April 12th from the Russian base in Baikonur. It lasted a total of 108 minutes, from launch to return to Earth.

For the first time in history, the small capsule with Gagarin inside managed to complete a full orbit around the Earth.

According to legend, two amazed women asked Gagarin if he had fallen from the sky as soon as he landed. And he replied: “In fact, yes!”.

Thanks to his mission, Gagarin became a celebrity, not only in the USSR but also in the rest of the world.

However, on March 27th, 1968, Gagarin died in a rather mysterious plane crash, which gave rise to various conspiracy theories about his death.
