33 giorni su un’isola deserta

33 days on a desert island

Grammar

Gerundio modale
Gerund to express “how”

“tre persone sono sopravvissute… mangiando cocco, molluschi e cacciando topi”
(three people survived… eating coconuts, mollusks, and hunting mice)

In this sentence, “mangiando” and “cacciando” are gerunds that express how the three people survived.
One of the many uses of gerund, in Italian, is to express the way or manner in which an action is performed, similar to “by doing” or “-ing” in English.

For example:

  • Ho risolto il problema leggendo il manuale (I solved the problem by reading the manual)
  • La ragazza ha imparato l’italiano parlando con gli italiani (The girl learned Italian by speaking with Italians)

Translation

It sounds like the plot of the movie “Cast Away” with Tom Hanks, but it’s all true: three people survived for 33 days on a deserted island in the Bahamas, eating coconuts, shellfish, and hunting rats.

The three, two men and a woman of Cuban nationality, were spotted by chance by the US Coast Guard during a reconnaissance flight, thanks to a flag they had built with scrap materials, hoping to be noticed. After the sighting, the three were rescued and are now doing well.

They told rescuers that their boat had sunk due to a sudden storm, but fortunately, they had managed to save themselves by swimming to the island.
