Il Primo Maggio, la Festa dei Lavoratori

First of May, the Workers' Day

Translation

The 1st of May, also known as Labor Day, is a special day celebrated in many countries around the world, including Italy.

This occasion has a long history, dating back to the labor movement of the nineteenth century, when workers fought for better working conditions, such as reduced working hours and the protection of their rights.

It was declared International Workers’ Day in 1889 in Paris during the congress of the Second International. However, it had already been celebrated in some countries for a few years due to a major labor strike organized in Chicago, United States, in 1886.

In Italy, Labor Day was officially established in 1946, after the end of World War II. Today, in many Italian cities, events are organized to raise public awareness on issues related to labor and social justice.

The most famous event is certainly the Concertone (big concert) held in Piazza San Giovanni in Rome, during which the most renowned Italian artists perform in front of an audience of hundreds of thousands of people.
